SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
1 – Scholarship Available for Dissertation Doctorate Program for School Year
2010-2011 A collaborative project of Tokyo University of Agriculture and
SEARCA
SEARCA is pleased to announce the availability of one slot of scholarship in
school year 2010-2011 for a 3-year graduate program leading to a
Dissertation Doctorate Degree at the Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan.
The scholarship is available only to any highly qualified national of the
regular member countries of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education
Organization (SEAMEO) namely: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao
PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste
and Vietnam.
The Dissertation Doctorate Program for Agriculture and Natural Resources
aims to contribute to the enhancement of agricultural research and
development in Southeast Asia through the provision of a TUA-SEARCA
scholarship for eligible candidates to be able to complete a doctorate
dissertation.
The following are the scholarship eligibility criteria:
1. Must be a researcher with full time employment at the university or
research institution.
2. Holder of a master’s degree in agriculture or related fields
3. Has produced at least 2 peer-reviewed scientific papers in scholarly
journals at home or abroad and has served first author of at least one of
those papers
4. Must have already made a substantial progress in a research project
which will deserve a doctorate degree in three years
5. Not more than 48 years of age at the start of the program
Applicant must submit application form, bio-data, dissertation proposal,
list of publications, and letter of agreement from the home institution to
SEARCA Graduate Scholarship Department by 15 January 2010.

2 – Food Security Center offers up to 29 research scholarships in 2010
The Food Security Center (FSC) is a newly established university center of
excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim,
Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the program
“exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation”, which is
supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the
Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany.
FSC’s mission is to make effective and innovative scientific contributions
in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve
food security in collaboration with partner Higher Education Institutions in
Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development
and research organizations. Thematically, FSC’s activities deal with issues
of sustainable food availability, food access, food use, and food

FSC awards up to 29 scholarships for PhD students and postdoctoral
researchers for a period of 4 to 36 months, starting April 15, 2010. The
Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students and postdoctoral fellows
pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarships
aim at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills
relevant to food security related issues. Furthermore, FSC aims at
establishing an active, long-lasting collaboration with the supported
researchers and their home institutions.
FSC offers three categories of scholarships:
1. Sandwich scholarships for PhD students (6 months)
2. Research scholarships for visiting postdoctoral researchers (4 months)
3. Excellence scholarships for FSC-supported PhD program “Young
Excellence School” (36 months)
